Is your home 100 years old or older? Then you can join over 570 of your Webster Groves neighbors who take pride in their historic homes and have purchased Century Home Plaques to display.
If you are not sure of the age of your house, just send an email to [email protected] and we will let you know.
There was a house-building boom in the 1920s in Webster Groves, when over 1750 houses were built. This is more than all previous years combined, and means that each year in the 2020s nearly 200 more homes become eligible for a Century Home Plaque. By the end of this decade, over 3400 of the approximately 8700 homes in Webster Groves will be over 100 years old.
Owners of historic buildings such as schools, churches, and businesses can also get a Century Plaque.
The Century Home Plaque program is run by the Webster Groves Historical Society and is not affiliated in any way with the city of Webster Groves or the city’s Historic Preservation Commission. We cannot and do not place restrictions on renovations, home improvements, etc. If your house is in a Webster Groves Historic District there could be some restrictions by the city. Please see a map of the five Webster Groves Historic Districts to see if your house is in one of the five districts.
The process to obtain a Century Home Plaque
The Research Team is always glad to assist members with research projects, including house history research. The first step is for you to become a member of the Webster Groves Historical Society (unless, of course, you are already a member!). This can be done online at this website; individual memberships start at $25 per year, and family memberships start at $40 per year.
The second step is to contact the Research Director by sending an email to [email protected]. In your email please include your name, address, and a preferred phone number and email address. At that point an electronic file on your house will be created, in which electronic copies of all the documents, maps, photos, etc. that are identified will be placed. These documents will be available to you as well.
The plaques cost $150, but there is no need to pay that until we have completed the research and determined when your house was built, and who the first owners were.
