Our History

When the Webster Groves Historical Society was incorporated in 1965 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, its initial goal was to save the home of Christopher and Mary Ann Eades Hawken, which was facing demolition. In July 1970, the house was moved to its current Southwest Park location at 1155 South Rock Hill Road.

Today, the beautifully restored Hawken House with its elegant period furnishings is open to the public for tours, and our extensive Archive devoted to local history is maintained just a few feet away in the Hearth Room at Historic Hawken House, a community event venue with seating for 120.

Rental income derived from the Hearth Room helps maintain the Hawken House Museum and manage our Archive, which includes an impressive array of local history materials.

The Webster Groves Historical Society is a non-profit organization under section 501(c)3 of the federal tax code and receives no funding from the City of Webster Groves. The society is funded completely by Membership, Private Donations, Grants, revenue from Hearth Room Rentals, and Corporate Sponsorships.

We have a unique relationship with the Webster Groves Pubic Library to ensure our residents have convenient access to a broad range of our Archives housed in the library’s history center.

DIGITAL DATABASE

We are also in the process of updating our website and creating an interactive database that will allow online research of our Archive and other relevant documents.

STATEWIDE PARTNERSHIPS

We work in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council and State Historical Society of Missouri, the Genealogical Society of Saint Louis and many of the other local and state designated Historical Sites.

Our Future

You can see we are quite busy…. but this is just part of who we are and what we do to pursue our mission to promote, preserve, and enhance the historical heritage of Webster Groves, including the management, operation and preservation of the Historic Hawken House and the Hawken Hearth Room.

We invite you to become a member of our fine organization and help us carry on our mission. Please visit our Membership page and JOIN US to support and preserve our community heritage.

This summer, we will offer the another season of our Hawken House Concert Series, which has drawn hundreds of music lovers to the front lawn of the Hawken House.
